GOOD PERSON

What I do

I run the joint which means I spend a lot of time on Skype and standing in lines in strange airports.

Have you been involved with film in your work? If so, how and what was your role?

I have produced, marketed, distributed, programmed, and done outreach for many, many, (did I say many?) films over the years. I have been moved, transported, amused, tweaked, humbled, exhilarated, edified, annoyed, and transported by them in equal measure.

How would you like to work with film in future?

I would like to watch more movies under the stars at night, movies made by refugees and other displaced people about their impossibly moving and incredibly inspiring pathways through life. (There's nothing like a Sudanese Lost Boy to give you a little shift in perspective.)

3 things you've worked on that have done real good in the world

1. Hoop Dreams... what a damn great movie, I still pinch myself for being lucky enough to work on it.
2. Recently... FilmAid screened the Haitian presidential debates for people living in displaced person camps around Port-au-Prince - democracy in action - pretty moving.
3. Ongoing... the President's Committee for the Arts and the Humanities is partners with Sundance Institute, presenting a selection of American and international films and filmmakers around the world - cultural diplomacy through the magic of the movies.

Documentaries you have seen recently and loved
Because of my new gig, I've been in Haiti and Kenya and haven't been in the theaters much. Instead I've been watching a lot of short films made by our refugee filmmaker students and colleagues - stories dealing with critical public health and safety issues like HIV/AIDS prevention, cholera and malaria prevention, sex and gender based violence and more. These films won't win awards at Sundance or get picked up by HBO Docs (not yet, anyway!), but they just might save someone's life. www.youtube.com/filmaid
Who or what has changed the world the most in your lifetime?
No one talks on the phone anymore - what's up with that?
Which issue keeps you up at night?
I'm lucky to be able to sleep well at night (knock on wood), but I get up at Anxiety O'Clock every morning with a long list of dragons to slay.
