I plan and manage a programme of public events at Amnesty's human rights action centre in London. The programme focuses on human rights and social justice issues and aims to provide a varied, lively and accessible way for people to find out more about these issues and to take action. The action centre also provides a platform for discussion and debate for use by other organisations and individuals working on these issues.
I regularly screen both documentary and feature films at the action centre, usually followed by a discussion with the film makers and/or experts in the field to enable people to find out more about the issues and to take further action.
I plan to continue to organise regular film screenings and am always interested in the possibility of screening new films at the centre.
Individual events don't have a major impact in themselves, but help to build public support for campaigns. Three of Amnesty's campaigns I've been involved in that have seen real changes have been around pushing for an international convention on trafficking, campaigning for individuals on death row, and achieving tighter controls on the spread of small arms.
