International-level sport bears significant economic potential, even by developed-world standards. Thus East African countries, which have the world's best runners but some of its poorest economies, have great potential to develop through sport. Running Across Borders vision, therefore, is to expand economic opportunities to East African youth through running, providing them with the support to reach their full athletic and educational potential. The Running Across Borders High Altitude Training Camp in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia provides the structure for our vision and provides: • A programme of training for female and male athletes supervised by the expertise of qualified coaches • Accommodation, food, sports equipment and medical expertise specific to the needs of an endurance athlete. • English tuition through our qualified Ethiopian English teacher. • The opportunity for our athletes to compete in domestic and international competitions. • Potential employment opportunities on site with athletes acting as chefs, sports administrators, cleaners and running guides to foreign athletes. • A facility in which to host foreign visitors as part of the RAB High Altitude Visit and Train Programme. Our vision is to use the model of our camp in Addis Ababa to benefit a wider consituency of young people in rural locations in Ethiopia and elsewhere in East Africa, in particular Kenya.
We can use film to raise awareness about issues related to sport and development, through the eyes of young athletes themselves. We can use film/media to highlight present day realities specific to youth issues in the countries in which we operate. Through engagement with media we raise awareness about what difficulties are posed for young people in East Africa today and how sports can change attitudes, inspire, motivate and empower individuals.
